Matthew Monahan doesn't consider himself a sculptor, but instead sees his pieces as "deep drawings." I saw his show at MOCA a few years back and was struck specifically by his use of paper.  He's able to take his drawings and lift them off the page by distorting the paper itself into three-dimensional space.  He talks about being inspired by the depth of paper after wearing it down so often while drawing and erasing. This use of distressed and damaged material runs through the bulk of Monahan's work, and his pieces often seem on the verge of dissolving.  For the Carnegie International, Life on Mars talked with Monahan about his work.  You can see that video below.
