Arcade Fire: Miroir Noir

Neon Bible - Mirror Noir - Miroir Noir

As part of their One Week Only broadcast, Pitchfork is showing the much blogged about Arcade Fire tour/"making of" Neon Bible film, Miroir Noir.  Directed by Vincent Morisset and shot by La Blogotheque's Vincent Moon, Miroir Noir gives a perfect balance of experimental film, behind the scenes footage and live performance.

I'm generally disinterested by concert DVDs of any kind.  Watching a band perform on my TV seems to take away all the power and beauty that existed at the time it was being filmed.  That combined with a multi camera setup that just keeps repeating the same series of shots, becomes tortuous by the third song.  Miroir Noir gets caught in none of these traps.  The film is a collage of powerful performance clips, intimate studio time and gorgeous cinematic moments.  I read a few complaints that the performance footage is too fragmented, but I think it's just that style that keeps the content vibrant and engaging.

The last thing I'll mention is that Vincent Moon has a wonderful grasp of the digital medium.  He takes the limitations of the format (pixelization, digital zoom, high gain), and exploits them for his own filmic purposes.  Ok, I'll stop gushing and embed the film.  It's only up for a week - so watch it while you can!

Since the video autoplays, I've attached it after the jump…
